Background Verification Before an Arranged Marriage: What to Check and Why

Kiran Desai

Background verification before marriage still carries a stigma in many Indian families. It feels like distrust. But consider an alternative: it is what you do when the stakes are too high to rely solely on word of mouth.

Why community trust has limits

The traditional process relies on community reputation. This works — until it doesn't. The most common misrepresentations are smaller omissions: a salary inflated by 30%, a concealed divorce, or a loan default. Community trust, however genuine, cannot catch these.

What ethical verification looks like

Ethical verification requires consent. The subject is always told what is being checked and why. They receive their own copy of the report. In our experience, the vast majority of people consent readily because they understand the process protects everyone.

If something comes up

Roughly 12–15% of cases reveal a discrepancy. We present findings factually. A salary discrepancy is different from a concealed criminal record. Our role is to ensure you have the facts; what you do with them is your decision.
